Excerpt: (Please note that the Excerpt is from the Unedited ARC and may change a bit before the finished book is released)

Ben pulls open the office door and stands to the side to allow me to go first. The hallway that was empty only a short while ago is now full of kids and their incessant conversations. With a shrug, I eye his class schedule quickly. Except for second and sixth period, we have exactly the same schedule. He’s in all of the advanced classes, too. Only he has gym for second period, and Latin for sixth – opposite of my schedule, except I take French.

Piece of cake.

I glance up at him again, and his eyes meet mine. My breath hitches. Something in his intense gaze makes me feel like he’s measuring me. And there’s something strange about his eyes. They’re brown, but I can tell he has colored contacts. Why would anyone color their eyes brown?

Something about the way he’s looking at me makes my heart flutter. A sniffle escapes me before I can stop it. Ugh. I clear my throat and start in the direction of first period. “Follow me.”

We elbow our way down the freshman hall toward the second floor, but before we start up I point down the way. “Do you know what your locker number is?”

Ben nods and pushes his backpack up on his shoulder further.

I wait for a second and then smile. “What is it?”

“706.” He has a slight accent and his voice is deeper than I expect. I suppress a shiver at the jolt that the musical timbre of his voice sends through my body. I’m resonating like a tuning fork. I really want him to speak again with every fiber of my being. What’s with me?

“Uh…okay.” I swallow, trying to regain composure. And take him to the general area of the locker. “Here it is.”

He looks at it, nods, and returns his gaze to me.

“I know you don’t have any books to put in it, but do you want to try out the combination?”

He lifts one shoulder in a shrug and spins the combo quickly through the three numbers. I purposefully look around so he knows I’m not peeking. He opens the locker wide, nods toward me and then closes it again.

“Great. We have first period over here.”

“You and I have the same first period?”

My body vibrates again, and I blink hard. So glad my back was to him so he couldn’t see the effect his voice has on me. I swallow and face him. “Actually, yeah. Our schedules are very similar. It’s a smallish school so there’s only a few tracks that juniors can be on.”

He nods, and his eyes are half lidded as if he’s bored already.

I lead him toward our class room. “We don’t really have assigned seats, so you can pretty much sit anywhere you want. I’ll show you to the gym at the end of class. I have French next, but it’s not too far from there.”

I lead him to the front of the class, and my friend, Tasha Brown gives me a wan smile and raises her eyebrows, looking back and forth between me and Ben. She mouths, Who’s that?

I roll my eyes and put up one finger toward her to let her know I’ll tell her in a minute. Then I turn to the teacher. I hand him the schedule from the office. “Hi, Mr. Scott. This is Ben Oscuro, a transfer.”

Mr. Scott sets down the Mountain Dew he was drinking and offers Ben a wide grin. He puts a hand out for him to shake. Ben hesitates but takes the hand in what looks like a firm grip. Mr. Scott shakes his hand afterward. “That’s some grip you’ve got there.” He laughs and leans down to the bottom drawer of his desk and hands Ben a Geography text book.

With a nod, I return to Tasha and squeeze into the desk next to hers. Because I’m at Jackson Hall partially on scholarship and partially on my father’s insurance money, I’m somewhat of a social pariah. My only real friend is Tasha, a pariah herself, being one of the few African-American kids in the school. Still she tends to be more popular than me, because at least her family does have money. And then there’s that rumor…

“So who is the new hottie?” Tasha hops up and down in her seat.

I shake my head at her. “You are one big hormone, you know that? Sure, he’s cute, but is there any guy in the room you don’t consider a hottie?”

Tasha scans the room, considering for a moment with her hand on her chin and a very serious expression on her face. Her hair is in the typical pigtail braids she usually uses to play up the uniform. She has on no sweater, and her shirt is one size too small, causing the buttons at the front to bow and expose part of her red bra. Finally she returns her gaze to me. “There’s only one guy in here that doesn’t rank hottie.”

“Really? Who?”

She leans in conspiratorially and whispers, “Mr. Scott.”

I nearly choke on a laugh as I eye the middle aged, balding teacher at the front of the room. But I have to admit, Jackson Hall is a prep school. And no one can afford to make their children look their best more than the wealthy. I guess if I take my father’s words to heart, it’s better to be the poor kid in the rich kids’ school…than the other way around. Right?

Tasha’s smile returns and I follow her gaze to figure out why. Ben Oscuro walks down the aisle between us and takes the desk right behind mine. The hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. He smells like pine and mint, and it reminds me of the outdoors. When I open them again, Tasha’s smile has grown impossibly wider. She leans towards me and whispers, “What was that you said about hormones again?”

I shove my elbow toward her but she dodges me with a giggle.

Hunter (Magio-Earth Novella) by Joanne Wadsworth Free January 28, 29, 30, 2014 on Amazon

Hunter by Joanne Wadsworth will be free during January 28, 29, and 30th! This is such a great story, and short enough for you to read during your lunch break!

Here’s my review:

Filled with loads of steam worthy moments, Hunter is exciting; unforgettable and charming. Hunter is a must read for those of you who love this series as much as I do. Once the hunter sets their sight on the hunt, nothing can get in their way…even the call of a soul-bound mate. Here we have another Peacian vs. Dralion love story. Fierce and captivating, Joanne Wadsworth creates action packed scenes adding, of course, possible fatal situations to keep the heart pumping until the end. Hunter can be read as a standalone, but will be more fun to read as part of this addicting series…one of my favorite couples make an appearance as well! Below is a full list of each book.

Protector (Magio-Earth, #1)
Warrior (Magio-Earth, #2)
Hunter (Magio-Earth, #2.5?)

Hi, and thank you so much for having me on your blog today, Angela.

HUNTER is a story which will take you deep into the Australian Outback and across those great

plains. This is a stand-alone novella within my fast-paced YA/NA fantasy romance line, where across worlds, soul-bound mates battle against both love and land.

I brought my heroine from HUNTER with me today. Lieska’s a warrior hunter from Dralion, and is soul-bound to Cole, a protector from the enemy nation.

Joanne: Hey, Lieska. Thanks so much for taking the time to come and sit with me over here at Angela’s. So, I’ve got to ask. You and Cole? How is it being soul-mated with him?

Lieska: Since he’s a hunter like me, it’s been a blast of who can out-chase the other first. He’s super speedy, but I love every minute of our hunts. Cole’s incredibly smart, funny, caring, sexy— Oh, maybe I shouldn’t have said all that. His hunter senses will be on fire if he catches a whiff of any of this stuff. No one here at Angela’s can whisper a word of what I just said. *smiles nicely at everyone*

Joanne: Gotcha. I’m sure we can all do that. So, looking back at that first day you met Cole inside his protectors’ arena, do you have any regrets about walking in? And what about confronting him?

Lieska: I just wish I could have kicked some protector butt before I met Cole. That would have been fun. And confronting Cole? I’ll never regret that. Heck, he kisses like a—

Cole: *marches in and runs his gaze over Lieska* My ears are burning. I wondered where you’d gotten to.

Lieska: I see you hunted me down again.

Cole: I found something of yours to track you with, and I couldn’t help myself. I love the chase. *pops a kiss on her nose as he sits* So, what are we all up to?

Joanne: We’re just hanging here at Angela’s. She said we could drop by, so we have. Not sure where she’s gotten to though, probably work or running the kids around. You wanna track her down for us, Cole?

Cole: Hah. You just want to get rid of me so you two can keep nattering. Nope, I’m staying. *crosses his arms*

Lieska: Stubborn hunter. *tweaks Cole’s chin*

Joanne: Alrighty then, well if you’re staying, then let me ask you a question, Cole. What’s it like being soul-bound to your sworn enemy?

Cole: It’s agonizing to keep the secrets I have to. Most of my fellow protectors would slice and dice me if they ever found out I’d accepted the mated bond with Lieska, but we’ve got Hope and Silas on our side, and Faith and Davio. They’re mated enemies like us, and it helps they know exactly what we’re going through. And being soul-bound with Lieska is incredible. I can’t give her up, not now, not even with all the problems we’ve still to face.

Joanne: Those guys are great. In the next book in this series they’re right there in the mix with Silvie and Guy as they undertake their journey. Things get pretty heated, but— Um, I probably shouldn’t go on about Enchanter since the third book doesn’t release until the summer. I better zip my lips.

Lieska: Gee, you are such a tease. You’ve gotta tell us what happens.

Joanne: Nope, I’m not spilling another word. Go and hunt down Hope and Faith if you want more goss. They’re in the story. They know it all.

Lieska: Oooh, did you just dare me? We hunters love a dare. *tugs Cole to his feet* Come with me. I’ll need your extra senses to catch them.

Cole: *grinning* See, this is why I love you. Let’s hunt. *they teleport away*

Joanne: Hey, come back here you two. We’re in the middle of an interview. Unbelievable. Oh, well I guess that’s it from us. Thanks for joining in. I hope you race out and grab your FREE copy of HUNTER and track down Lieska and Cole and discover more about their story.

HUNTER is the perfect short story to get you started on the series, and likely hooked. Full-length novels, PROTECTOR and WARRIOR are available, and ENCHANTER (book three) is coming real soon.

Here’s an excerpt from Hunter to tempt you:

Chains cranked, and the solid paneled iron gates at the entrance rolled open. This was what I’d been waiting for. Finally I’d be able to see inside the three-story high open-aired arena. It was a beauty with its ancient circular architecture.

“Wow. Do you see that?” Hope whispered to me from where we hid in a bush.

I shoved the brush farther aside, and we both poked our noses in. The protectors’ arena was close in size to our fighting force’s in Dralion. Their blocked seats were layered back and up and able to hold thousands of spectators. Groups of protectors trained on the central sandy floor with swords and spears and axes, with likely more beyond. Some of the men wore red tunics with leather-flapped skirts, and they lunged and parried, as accurate with their brutally sharp weapons as any warrior would be. The women trained in their battle leathers. So close. This was the chance I’d been waiting for. It had definitely been right to bring Hope. Hopefully she’d be able to help me keep a level head.

“Let’s go.” I gripped Hope’s hand and ’ported us. Everything darkened as I made the short jump through space.

Hope wobbled as we arrived near the wall. “Lieska, what the heck are you doing?”

“You saw the gate open. It’s an invitation I can’t turn down.” I plucked the sides of my hip-hugging black leather pants. “Look at us. I’m dressed no differently to any of the protector women, and you’re completely unassuming in jeans and a t-shirt. Except for this. The Stetson has to go. It screams Earth.” I nabbed it and tossed it behind a flax bush growing beside the wall. “Now no one’s going to suspect we’re from Dralion unless we announce it. We’ll be normal people, not catching a second glance.”

“Geez, I hate how my own words come back to bite me.” She shook her head. “Just make sure you don’t announce our arrival your way. No throwing any daggers at the protectors, because that would be announcing it, in case you weren’t aware.”

“I’m aware, and I’ll try and keep them sheathed, maybe.” I couldn’t stop from rubbing my hands together. Finally I’d have a chance to sort this problem. The hunt was on. I strode in and the breeze lifted my long brown locks and swept strands across my face. Two men battled close by and one of the men’s blade’s struck flesh and bone. Blood spurted in a wide arc. My blood thrummed to join the fight. Oh yeah. I wish I’d been the one to inflict that wound. The injured man grasped his arm, holding the edges closed. His blood ceased running and his skin began to knit together. A fast-healer. Damn. What a shame.

“Ew.” Hope puffed as she caught up. “Are your senses still on fire?”

“Burning bright. So stay close in case I need to ’port us out of here quick.” I followed the safety rail around the perimeter. My senses flared. There. A man in black jeans stretched as if readying himself for training. The denim molded his butt. Mm-mmm.

He selected a two-handed sword from the rack and twirled it in a precise figure eight. Slowly he built up speed, and moved through a series of fluid training moves. He held the battle skills, and only those who had such an affinity for their weapon did.

“Is that him? The one you’re after?” Hope hauled me to a stop.

“Yes, and it appears he needs a battling partner. Wait here.”

“I’ll wait provided you agree not to kill anyone.”

“We’ll see, just don’t draw any attention to yourself.”

“Huh, I can’t believe you’re telling me not to draw attention to myself. Hello. Give yourself your own pep talk.” With a harrumph, she snuck under the railing. She plopped onto the wooden bench and grasped the edge under her knees, squishing her knuckles.

“I would take my own advice, except I don’t think I’m up for listening. That’s why I have you.” She was one of my best friends, even though she’d accepted a protector as her mate. I could deal.

Stroking the hilt of my ever-present side sword, I walked toward the one my senses had flared on.

My New Book: Distraction (Coming Summer 2014)

I suck at posting here. I’m sorry about that. On to my great news….I’m super excited to announce my submission for Distraction—my New Adult/Contemporary Romance—has been picked up by Untold Press, and should release sometime this summer!

Wahoooo. I’m so freaking excited, like wow! I love these characters and can’t wait to introduce them to you all 😀

Incase you didn’t get a chance to read the steamy teaser on my FB page, I’ll post it below along with Distraction’s unofficial blurb. *teaser is unedited* Thoughts are always welcome.

Coming Summer 2014

Distraction

Aside from the normal changes in her life, college junior, Elle Richards, could always count on her friendship with Tristan. The longing for him to love her back is something she kept well hidden, even from herself. No matter how many miles apart they are, regular phone calls and texts keep them close…until the day everything changes.

Wide Receiver Tristan Daniels has a good thing going. Much to his, and every single women’s surprise, he’s in a committed relationship, and the possibility of going pro looks more than promising…until his spur of the moment transfer to a rival college is approved. Now, Tristan will be forced to be in the presence of the woman he’s secretly loved for as long as he can remember. Elle.

Being away from one another was enough to keep Tristan and Elle distracted, but angst, confusion, and troubled secrets catapults them into a breathless, heart pumping story you won’t want to miss.

A Great Big World’s Say Something fused with One Republic’s Burning Bridges sheds light into the emotion journey that is DISTRACTION.

~Teaser~

(unedited)

I ran my thumb over her bottom lip, needing to be sure she was really there and not a figment of my imagination. I didn’t wonder long. Taking control, Elle grabbed my shirt and crashed her lips to mine. Best. Fucking. Kiss. Ever. I skimmed her lip with the tip of my tongue and she released a soft whimper. I damn near lost my shit. Her hands moved under my shirt, sliding her fingers across the tight muscles along my back.

Lady Amber’s Tours~Jen Wylie’s Tales of Ever~Book Review and Promo

Review

Fans of Suzanne Collin’s series, Hunger Games, or J.K. Rowling’s, Harry Potter will thoroughly enjoy Jen Wylie’s, Tales of Ever. Tales of Ever is a constant death thrilling adventure until the very end, AND there is a freaking love interest in the mix, which made reading it more kick @ss.

In a place where nothing is as it seems, sixteen year old, Misha is propelled into a world where survival is the only way to live.

Misha learned to deal with the loss of her father at a young age, and when tragedy comes around again by the death of her mother, she is left as a ward of the state…until an unknown relative discovers her. The story really picks up here when Misha’s long lost uncle takes her to the safety of her new home.

Of course, safe is relative and her uncle learns why Misha and her mom were hidden for so long. Misha is told that her father is in alive…but in a different world? Since she was born with the full power to wield fire like her parents, Misha is labeled as wild, unstable. So, with a quick, forceful push through a portal into another world, Misha finds herself in Ever. Shit just got real.

Falling into a near deathtrap, Misha discovers plants, creatures, the sky and other means of ‘normal’ have transformed into a living nightmare. Giant, poisonous spiders, killer ducks, dragons and more fill the pages with constant worry. However, she’s determined to find her dad…and stay alive.

Soon enough, Jadus, a human-ish (swoon worthy) guy swoops in, saving Misha before certain death (of course!).

Still, hell has no ending while in Ever and the adventure only grows more troublesome.

Hunky Jadus and Misha are separated, forcing Misha to find her way to safety alone and also to search for her dad without Jadus’s capabilities to exist, survive in Ever. Crap, I just wanna tell you all what happens, but I can’t. That wouldn’t be fun, right? The story takes off from page one and before you know it, you’re finished with the entire book. I’d love to read more about Ever and by that I really mean—read more about Misha and Jadus! I really heart him, or whatever he is. Great job, Jen! Continue scrolling down to read special excerpts and find out how to stalk, I mean follow, this fabulous author 😉

Tales of Ever

(Volumes 1-6)

By

Jen Wylie

January 10, 2014 by Untold Press www.untoldpress.com

Fantasy/Paranormal, YA 10+

(84 000+ words, 250pages)

~Tales of Ever is suitable for readers 10 and up. Originally written as a novella series, it has been reworked and is now available as a complete novel~

Blurb

A few months ago, I was a normal girl. Life sucked, and just like everyone else, I took the simple things for granted. At least until I got this new power, a “gift” mom called it. Apparently, I’m a firestarter. I didn’t want to be. I didn’t ask to be. It would be cool if it wasn’t so dangerous and I knew how to control it. When an uncle I’d never heard of showed up to take care of me after my mom died, I should have been grateful. As it turned out, my whole family isn’t normal and more than a little bit crazy. I thought things couldn’t get any worse. I was wrong.

They banished me to Ever.

* * * * *

Welcome to Ever.

Ever; a deadly realm where feared, powerful, and dangerous magical beings are banished. It’s not a world, but a magically created prison you can never break out of. Who, or what, made Ever? I’ve no idea. They were powerful, and cruel. That is all I can tell you.

Ever is like, and unlike, every other world. Nothing is safe. Safety is a dream. Ever is a nightmare. Few survive their first day. Nothing is what it seems. If something appears safe, it isn’t. If something appears dangerous, well it is, but probably more than you think.

Ever has no sun, no moon, and no stars at night. Time is told by the ever changing color of the sky where portals open, dropping new inhabitants or new terrors. Time does pass. Don’t worry, you won’t get old. You won’t live that long.

The landscape changes without reason from desert to jungle. The flora isn’t safe at any time. There is food, if you can find it without getting eaten yourself. Most plants and animals are poisonous. So is the water.

Are you afraid? You should be. This is the end. It gets worse of course. Remember the portals? Do you think angels come through? Innocent people rarely do. Mostly, it is evil people, people too powerful to kill. Their magic works here. The creatures are worse.

Do you understand? Well, you will eventually, or you’ll die. There is no escaping Ever.

Ever.

~Excerpt 1~

Fire.

I see it everywhere.

It started a year ago, maybe more. I don’t remember. Images of fire appear more now than they did before.

Flames always dance just out of sight. They flicker on school lockers, in windows, anywhere. Everywhere.

Now they hover over the road as I run. If I didn’t know better, I’d think they were only mirages from the heat. They aren’t real. They never are. Nothing burns, there is no heat. I hate seeing them. Every time they appear, I wonder if I’m crazy.

Glaring at my watch, I round the block. School sucked today, as usual. I’ve run farther and faster than I normally do, trying to push all my stupid problems away while trying to ignore the fire.

The last year I’ve been unsettled. Sometimes I get uncomfortable hot flashes. I don’t understand why. Mom gets them sometimes, too. She says not to worry about it. I wish I could, but I know I’m too young for such things and they have been coming more often.

I can’t tell her about seeing the fire, or about the dreams. She wouldn’t believe me and I don’t want to put more stress on her.

We do Yoga and that helps. So does running. I’ve done a lot of both as the months pass and things only get worse.

It hasn’t been the best year. Mom lost one of her jobs. She found another, but it doesn’t pay as much. Lack of money really stresses her out.

I hope she’ll let me get a decent job soon. Something other than yard work and babysitting. I want to help. Mom looks so tired lately. She’s really starting to worry me.

In a few months, I’ll be sixteen. I haven’t asked about getting my driver’s license. I’m sure Mom won’t bring it up either. We don’t have money for a car, anyway. We don’t even have money for lessons or the stupid license test.

What would I do if something happened to Mom?

I have no idea. We don’t have any really close friends. A few people we sort of talk to, like our old neighbor, Mrs. Green. No family either, at least none that Mom ever talks about.

I don’t have any friends at school. Even though I go to a public school, most of the kids there have money. We don’t, and it shows. People can be so fickle. Of course, I don’t really try to make friends. I fall into the quiet and shy group. Years ago I gave up trying. Too many times I thought I’d found a friend and then got stabbed in the back.

Of course seeing fire sets me apart, too. The fear of someone finding out how weird I am forces me to keep my distance. I know normal people don’t see fire like I do, but some seem obsessed with it. I watch them play with matches and lighters outside at school and I only shake my head.

I’m not obsessed. What I see scares me. If I could, I’d choose to never see the flames again.

~Excerpt 2~

I squeeze my eyes together tightly, trying to bring the fire under control. I can do this, I can…

The fire roars around me. Not good.

I feel cool fingers on my face and my eyes snap open. Jadus stands right before me, his face set and intense.

Certainly he knows how dangerous it is to touch me? No, he doesn’t. He doesn’t know…oh god…

“Think of water, rivers, ice, snow,” he whispers, staring into my eyes.

I do as he asks; terrified I’m going to kill him. Amazingly the fires die. Letting out a shuddering breath I squeeze my eyes closed again for a moment. “Sorry.”

He chuckles. “Powerful gift you have there.”

“Dangerous.”

He shrugs. “You’ll figure it out.”

“I hope so,” I mutter, looking around the large charred area surrounding us in a little bit of horror and a little bit of awe.

He gives me a moment to silently collect myself before gesturing for me to follow him. “Come on, I want to show you something.”

We head up the path, higher and higher. Finally reaching the top, he leads me over to the edge. My eyes grow wide as I stare out at the landscape before me. I can see the pink desert in the distance. The rainbow jungle spreads out in a line below. I can see a huge river too, and beyond it another kind of forest. The more I look the more I see.

“That’s a whole lot of Ever.”

Jadus points off to our right and I see a portal open high in the sky. That can’t be good.

Turned out height doesn’t matter. Not this time.

Something huge flies out.

My mouth drops open. Is that a dragon? The beast roars and flies off as the portal closes.

Jadus looks over at me and chuckles at the look on my face. He spreads his arms wide. “Welcome to Ever.”

Book Review for A Zebra Like Me by Amy Maurer Jones

ZLM horizontal small banner copy

A Zebra Like Me is such a sweet story about a brave girl who has had to live with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. EDS is a complex disease affecting a persons entire body, but the mental aspect is a hard burden to carry. Not only does the main character, Maybelle struggle with injuries and frequent illnesses, she constantly battles with depressive tendencies. She wants to be normal, whatever that is. To her, going to school without the risk of breaking a bone from a simple fall is it. Or being able to walk down the hall without being in excruciating pain. She wants to fit in, not have people look at her with pity pouring from their wondering gazes. She wants….a regular, teenage life. So, she sends a little note heaven bound…a note gracefully falls the sky, and the story begins. You are not alone, Maybelle.

The character, along with any person dealing with chronic conditions, YOU are not alone.

As a nurse, seeing, dealing with kids who have EDS and other illnesses made this book a bit more personal for me. These kids endure the unthinkable, every single day of their lives and for the most part, they keep going just as Maybelle does. Amy did a fantastic job writing this story so, as a lay person, you can easily understand what’s going on in the characters life. Man, I just cried while reading this book. If you know of anyone struggling with an illness, regardless of what it may be, A Zebra Like Me can help them. Just, READ THIS BOOK! I can’t encourage you enough. Even if you’re wanting to read a book about a girl who likes the guy next door, then read this book. Family issues, first love, first kisses, first date, first dance, first EVERYTHING are all part of this great book, are you catching on? Read and enjoy!

About the Author

Amy Maurer Jones has been happily married to her own version of Edward Cullen for sixteen years. She lives in the small town of Tabor City, North Carolina (close to the North and South Carolina shore) with her husband Kelly and their two beautiful children, Olivia and Keaton.

Amy loves reading and writing Young Adult because she finds young people inspiring. She appreciates how teens are able to look at the world with a fresh perspective and willingly open their minds to the endless possibilities that life has to offer. She particularly enjoys writing strong heroines who face problems head on, learn, grow and mature into the type of people who do the right thing.

When Amy isn’t reading and writing, she teaches high school theater arts and dance. To say that Amy has a flare for all things creative would be an understatement, just don’t ask her to assemble anything that requires instructions or sadly, you will be out of luck!

~Author’s Note~

A Zebra Like Me is a work of fiction but Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and the message in this story are very real. I have EDS and I’ve learned to live with this disease. Sadly, much of my battle has been seeking compassion and finding acceptance from those who don’t understand it. My mission in publishing this book is two-fold.

Writer J. A. Campbell

Tales of ever-1~Tales of Ever is suitable for readers 10 and up. Originally written as a novella series, it has been reworked and is now available as a complete novel.

***Julie’s Note: I read this in its original format as six short stories and loved it. I highly recommend this novel.***

As it turned out, my whole family isn’t normal and more than a…

Excerpt:

“These graphics suck,” George says and I look back at the screen. We’re standing in the middle of the Estate, colorful orbs quivering ahead of us. We each have to choose our starting advantage. Waterfalls shimmer in the distance and the sunlight streams over multicolored stones in the courtyard.

“Amateurs,” Lanyon concurs. “I mean, they couldn’t have five waterfalls?”

“Your ironic wit is mind blowing, but choose your damn orbs,” I tell them. I consider. Magic, defense, offense, stealth, and charisma. I always go for magic as a black mage, but I wonder if a druid needs something else. Screw it. I need charisma in real life, too.

“Charisma?” Lanyon asks. “No one ever picks charisma.”

“We’re a party of a thief, druid, and a bard. We’re screwed regardless.”

“You two underestimate the mighty power of my lute,” George argues.

“Did you start with charisma?” Lanyon asks.

“Hell, no. I have charisma in spades. I started with stealth.”

“Great. A stealthy bard,” I sigh.

“She’s right,” Lanyon concedes. “We’re screwed.”

However, it actually isn’t bad at all at first. We power through the Estate and make it to the Yobanaria Dale with no resurrections and all at level ten. I’m impressed. George hasn’t actually fought anything, but he has some pretty awe-inspiring charm mastery already. I think I might have a serious crush. He seals the deal when he buffs my hailstorm spell without even being asked.

“Can you guys watch El Thiefelo? My mom wants me to eat supper,” Lanyon says.

“Yeah, we’ve got it,” I tell him. “The first boss is in the elven ruins anyway, so we should grind a bit. I think he’s a twelve.”

George and I explore the Dale, taking out bats and Joba spores. It’s fairly quiet, except for when we combo with his charms and my spells and he yells out, “Eat lute, bitch,” but it’s nice. We work well, almost inherently understanding each other. I’ve never been able to play this effectively with anyone. I try not to think about his eyes. Stupid boys, being cute and stuff.

By the time Lanyon comes back, we’re all at level 12, although Lanyon leveled up just by standing by a door while we played. Still, we are ready to take on Balsa the Proud. As a black mage, it took me about nine seconds. Trees don’t like fire. However, druids don’t have the same level of black magic and all elemental magic is weakened by the need to draw from the elements nearby. Sadly, trees seem to avoid storing fire runes in their villages. I expect this to be a little more challenging. It might even take fifteen seconds.

“First boss. Also known as the freebie bitch to sucker the young folks into a false sense of security,” Lanyon announces as he runs into the center of Balsa’s lair. The cinema plays and then, in a moment of pure absurdity, El Thiefelo is squished as Balsa steps on him.

“Can someone revive me?” Lanyon whines.

About the Authors

Sarah Daltry:

Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She’s written works in various genres – romance, erotica, fantasy, horror. Genre isn’t as important as telling a story about people and how their lives unfold. Sarah tends to focus on YA/NA characters but she’s been known to shake it up. Most of her stories are about relationships – romantic, familial, friendly – because love and empathy are the foundation of life. It doesn’t matter if the story is set in contemporary NY, historical Britain, or a fantasy world in the future – human beings are most interesting in the ways they interact with others. This is the principle behind all of Sarah’s stories.

Sarah has spent most of her life in school, from her BA and MA in English and writing to teaching both at the high school and college level. She also loves studying art history and really anything because learning is fun.

When Sarah isn’t writing, she tends to waste a lot of time checking Facebook for pictures of cats, shooting virtual zombies, and simply staring out the window.

She has written several books, most notably Bitter Fruits, an urban fantasy in the Eden’s Fall series, and the Flowering series, including Forget Me Not, Lily of the Valley, and Star of Bethlehem.

Pete Clark:

Pete Clark likes writing, animals, potato chips, and cheese. Midnight Riders is his first published novel, although he can also proudly say he finally finished Helix Crashing, the fantasy novel he has been working on for over a decade. In addition, he has written Across the Barren Landscape, a collection of linked Western short stories. He also writes plays, both dramatic and comedic.

When he is not writing, Pete tends to ignore everyone around him and obsess over sports.
