“I can’t imagine that meaningless sex can be rewarding in the long run.”
I sighed. After a bad marriage, meaningless sex was a relief from sex that was wrapped up in anger and frustration and misunderstanding. “It’s not,” I said. “But it’s good enough for now.”
She stared at me, and I could tell from the expression on her face that I was forcing her to confront issues that were difficult.
“I only want to fuck someone who loves me,” she said. “Is that so wrong?”
“Someone will love you, Kate,” I said, for someone would. Kate was not the kind of woman to remain single for very long. I was surprised she’d been single for as long as she had, but there were several traumas in her life and she needed time to recover. “Do you really want to wait until he does? Is masturbating all alone in your room at night, for what – a year? Is that really good enough for you?”
As soon as I said it, I knew it was a mistake. I could almost see her heart crack.
She left the living room and I heard her opening and closing drawers and cupboards with quite a lot of force. She was hurt. I followed her in after a moment and stood behind her as she fiddled with a teapot.
“I’m sorry.” I reached out and touched her shoulder, wanting to reconnect and mend things.
“You’re a bastard.”
“No, I’m not. I’m just being honest.” I turned her around and tried to catch her eye but she avoided me. “Kate, you deserve to have pleasure when you need it. You’re not a bad girl for wanting to feel it. I can give it to you. I want to give you the pleasure you need in the way that most appeals to you, deep down inside if you’re brave enough to admit it to yourself.”
She actually closed her eyes and turned her head away.
“Here,” I said and pulled her into an embrace, needing to break the icy silence between us. She didn’t respond, her body stiff. “I’m sorry I hurt your feelings by speaking the truth so plainly,” I said softly. “If this is going to work between us, you have to let me break down those protective walls you’ve built up around yourself. Otherwise, you won’t really experience submission the way you need to.”
Finally, she opened her eyes. “So you’re telling me you have to be mean to me in order for me to be able to submit?”
No, you have to be honest with me about what you need and want. You have to honest with yourself.”
I watched her chest heaving. She was close to tears. I had to save the moment or the night would be over, and fast.
“Kate, are you sexually attracted to me?”
“You already know you’re very handsome.”
“I didn’t ask that. I asked you if you were sexually attracted to me.” She didn’t answer so I spoke even more softly “Do you want to fuck me? Is there a part of you that just wishes you could right now and to hell with convention?”
Finally, she replied, her voice wavering. “Yes. But I’m afraid.”
What are you afraid of? That you’ll have a great orgasm or three?”
“I’m afraid that you’ll hurt me.”
“I told you and Lara told you that I’m not into pain. I don’t want to hurt you, Kate. I want to make you feel pleasure.”
“Not that kind of hurt.”
I shook my head and stared at her for a moment. I knew what she meant. I had to get it through to her that we would keep things from becoming too tangled emotionally.
“That won’t happen. We’ll only have sex. None of that relationship stuff. We won’t have breakfast together or go to movies or on dates. We’ll fuck. I’ll tie you up and make you come until you scream. I’ll come. Then I’ll go home. You’ll sleep like a baby. End of story.”
She looked doubtful, her brow furrowed. “What if I fall in love with you?”
I fought the grin that was threatening. “I won’t let you.”
“That’s like saying you can control the weather. You can’t.”
I couldn’t keep back my smile. “I can control the weather, too.”
She smiled back reluctantly, turning away slightly so I couldn’t see her, but I caught the grin nonetheless.
“I know this is all new to you. I know you’re afraid.” I embraced her once more, pressing my hips against her so she knew how hard I was. How much I wanted her.
Then I let her go and went back into the living room and sat back in the center of the sofa. She’d have to follow me eventually, and I’d know by how she responded and where she sat whether I was going to make any progress with her or whether I had gone too far. My sense was that she was fighting with all her might not to want me, not to want this, but that she was failing.
And more importantly, that she wanted to fail.

Excerpt

“I’ve told you fifteen times already, Agent Grimes, I don’t know how he died. Cicero and I fought and I heard Thompson getting his ass kicked. I ended the fight as fast as inhumanly possible and rushed out to help him. That’s when the cavalry came in through the proverbial window. When we went back into the office, Cicero wasn’t undead anymore.” I sighed as I recounted the made-up chain of events for the fiftieth time since returning to Washington, D.C.
I closed my eyes and thanked the gods the events of the past month were over. The weeks I spent working as an agent in the Chicago field office of the FBI had been pure hell. I got my partner assaulted by one vampire, and then killed by a different vampire named Cicero. The master of the City of Chicago had been a crazed lunatic and my partner paid the ultimate price. I held back the tears for my dead friend and smiled, for the gods had given me Thompson, my current partner, werelion extraordinaire, and the only reason Cicero had his ashes in a ceramic container and I didn’t.
“Agent Ashlyn,” Agent Grimes began and cleared his throat, “the forensic team found Cicero’s body with his throat torn out and completely drained of blood. Let me get this straight, you have absolutely no idea how he ‘became un-undead’?” I’d answered this question so many times I was about to snap, and how dare he quote me to myself.
“Grimes, I’ve explained this a hundred times and at least five of those times to you. The wounds inflicted on Cicero couldn’t have killed him. Even a common vampire couldn’t be killed by blood loss, so I didn’t kill him. Even if I had, it would have been self-defense! The deputy director himself congratulated me on a job well done. Why the sudden change?”
“It’s easy. We didn’t know you ate the rogue vampire, Ashlyn. You’re an FBI agent, hired to police the rogue vampires. That means bringing them in so they can be incarcerated, tried by jury, and punished by a court of law!” He seemed to mean every word he said. Was this guy joking? A vampire who kills somebody doesn’t get a jury. They’d be lucky to get a cell without a window.
“Which is why I tried to non-lethally subdue him,” I lied again through my teeth. The douchebag abducted my injured partner, used him to get to me, and then killed him without a second thought. If you ask me, he got what he deserved. I fought down the urge to flip my superior off and walk out of the room. “What else can I do for you, Agent Grimes? I’ve answered all your questions, I’ve filed all my reports, and honestly I don’t know what else to say. If you don’t believe me, the Deputy Director will have my resignation in the morning.” I stood and made my way to the door, not giving the mousy man a chance to respond.
I thought the entire act of my rebellion quite debonair until I placed my hand on the knob and tried to turn the handle. I could have sworn I heard a trombone somewhere in the room going wa-wa-waa. Talk about ruining the moment. I watched Grimes when he came through the door. He didn’t lock it, so I knew something wasn’t right. I turned around and stared at the balding man sitting at the table tapping his pen on his notepad and staring pointedly at the mirror on the wall. “Sonofabitch,” left my lips beforeI could curb my tongue.
Instead of rounding on Grimes, I walked over to the mirror. I stopped in front of it and crossed my arms. I thought about knocking on it to get their attention, but settled for my secondary idea. I uncrossed my arms and held out my talon. Slowly, I etched a circle slightly larger than my head in the otherwise perfect surface of the glass. Once it was completely etched, I rapped my knuckles against it. I smiled as the circle fell out smoothly and shattered on the floor in the tiny dark room behind the mirror.
A normal human wouldn’t have been able to see in the dark room, but I didn’t have a problem. I peered in and saw the Deputy Director standing next to a tall slender man I’d never seen before. I stood there staring at the both of them and waited for some sort of explanation.
“Agent Ashlyn, please meet me in my office in five minutes,” the Deputy Director said without a hint of emotion or surprise.
I seriously considered telling him what he could go do with himself in his office, but I blinked and pulled my face from the Ashlyn-sized hole in the glass. I turned and strode past Grimes. By the time I reached the door, the handle was unlocked, denying me the satisfaction of ripping the door off its hinges. I snarled and made my way to the elevator.

Teasers/Quotes

“Kid, I hope you know you’re filling out the report on this one.”
”Hey, it wasn’t my fault, chief. They had rocket launchers.”
”Why is it with you, they always have rocket launchers?”
”Whatever works? They keep missing with the smaller crap.”
He laughed, a little.
”Can we get a ride?”
”Not if they’re still out there with more rockets.”

I really hoped not to get shot tonight. I hated clothes shopping.

I didn’t look back as we got into the suburban and drove back to the hotel.
Why should I look back? Marcel would fix it. Marcel fixed everything.

Book News & More!

Hey! I really suck at keeping everyone informed about, well, everything. So very sorry! Let’s catch up. Addiction (Distraction, #2) is set to release December 9, 2014. That also happens to be my youngest daughters birthday, so it’s a bit special for me. Gosh, they freaking grow up so fast! Geesh O_O

Anyway, Addiction picks up where Distraction ends. I’ve spoken with many of you about the way the first book ended. I know you wanted more and I’m hoping Addiction will satisfy what you felt was missing. Lots of stuff happens in this book! I’m currently editing the end now, making sure the story is as awesome as possible.

I’ve been asked how many books will be in the series, and the answer is 4. Originally Tristan and Elle had three books with a novella featuring Alyssa. However, Addiction threw a wrench in my plans.  I’ve added a surprise with Addiction and I can’t wait to share it with you! Here’s the list of books in order.

FINAL BOOK

Hope’s Deceit! I’m really, really, REALLY sorry! I know I’ve put Blain, Trinity and the rest of the gang on hold for way too long. I wanted to get Addiction finished so I could spend all my energy on these characters. HD2 is a bit more than half way written, so my new goal is to have it finished by THANKSGIVING! Which isn’t too far way (now I’m hungry). As for the number of books in The Fated series, I don’t know. I’ve planned for three the entire time, but you never know what may happen between book two and book three. Here’s a list of books, in order.

Excerpts:

Excerpt 1: Callie’s POV
“Okay. It’s settled. One date.” Lifting his palm, he pressed it against my cheek, holding it there. My skin tingled on contact, burning me in all sorts of ways. “But I think we need to try something out beforehand just to make sure that we know what we’re getting ourselves into.”
“Um, what?” I stiffened, panicking at the possibilities of what he was saying. Sweat formed along the back of my neck, but I couldn’t move to wipe it away.
Fuck. This wasn’t good.
Without warning, he pressed his mouth against mine, taking my heart, body, entire soul by complete surprise. Ky captured me in all the ways a woman wanted to be captured by a man.
And oh, what a damn delicious capture it was.
I’d always wondered what it’d be like to kiss this boy. And it wasn’t because I saw him in that sort of light growing up either, just simple curiosity, to say the least But whatever preconceived notions I had about awkwardness and painful teeth clashing went out the window the moment his tongue pressed against my lips.
Holy hell. Now this was a kiss.
His fingers, strong and sure, tangled in my hair, releasing my ponytail with the flick of his thumb. Damn, he was good. My hair fell over my shoulders, shadowing my cheeks, as well as his. I scooted forward, pressing my hands onto the bareness of his neck, tracing the lines of his muscled skin on his shoulders like I’d wanted to do since I first got him in the room with me. I moaned, embarrassingly loud because yeah, this was beyond any kiss I’d ever experienced in the past. Slow, agonizing, and perfect. Ky made the act of kissing as sensual as having sex in a steamy shower. Not that I’d ever actually experienced hot, steamy shower sex or anything. But um, yeah, it was definitely on my bucket list.

Excerpt 2:
Forehead pressed against mine, uncaring about the world around him, Ky’s words whispered over my lips, the coolness chilling me even more than the fact that I was still standing there in wet clothes. “Don’t ever leave me like that again, Calla Lily. I don’t care if you hate me. I don’t care if you want to kick my ass, or kick me in the balls because you’re pissed at the world or me in general. I don’t know what happened to make you leave the rink. But dammit, I do know that you won’t get that chance again. Because from now on, I will be there, and I won’t back down, do you hear me? You. Will not. Run.” I nodded, sniffling. Yeah, I heard every last word. Felt it like it was being sewn and weaved with needle and thread throughout my traitorous, agreeing body. If he kept looking at me like this, I’d fall to my knees…give him whatever he wanted—pain to my heart and all.
Licking his lips, eyes glazing over completely, Ky leaned in so close that our noses were pressed flush now. “Because, Calla Lily Bennett, I. Am. Yours. I’ve been yours for years. And I won’t stop being yours. Ever.”
Closing my eyes was the only way to escape from the sudden abruptness of his words. The brutal, perfect truth and promise that was only emphasized with the twinkle in his eyes. Maybe if I kept my lids drawn, then he wouldn’t say anything else. He’d get the hint and he’d leave. Unfortunately though, a part of me—a very traitorous and emotional part of me—didn’t want Ky to go. I was tired of fighting the pain; tired of living an emotional lie that I was just fine and dandy forgetting. Today was proof of that in the strangest of senses.
But there had to be a way I could get by without actually remembering, right? Maybe my wish of starting over and forgetting weren’t that far off after all. Because I wanted Ky, like Ky wanted me. I just didn’t want what he was going to force me to do in the end.

Last summer, Anna’s world got turned upside-down. It’s hard to believe her travels to different worlds and fantastic yet dangerous adventures really took place. Little things, like the twinge of pain from her healing ribs, and a few relics, remind her that her journeys did actually occur. David, a ghost she met on her travels, suddenly reappears, bringing both old friends and foes back into her life. To help Sabaska, Anna must attempt to rescue captured Travelers from a Vanir stronghold, and still get home in time for school. An easy task compared to dealing with her mixed feelings for Cahir.
Uncovering a Vanir plot to find a powerful lost mage will test her strength and dedication to the Travelers. With the help of new and old friends, they set out in search of the mage. He could tip the balance of the war in either side’s favor and it’s up to Sabaska and Anna to get there first.

Excerpt:

“You have the most boring life,” a faint voice said in Anna’s ear.
Straightening from her hunched position over her math test, Anna looked wildly around, her heart racing.
“Right here,” the voice said again.
Turning, she shrieked as a gray man solidified next to her in the aisle. Her pencil snapped in her hand. She picked up one of the broken ends and held it like a weapon.
“Now, is that anyway to treat an old friend?”
Anna stared at the gray man a little longer, took in the tight pants, belt full of pouches, and cloak. She sighed. Being able to see through him should have been her first clue.
“Anna, is there a problem?” Her math teacher, Mr. Frank, sounded annoyed.
Anna looked around. The entire class stared at her. “Uh.” She glanced at David, the apparition, and then back at the class.
“Well, they can’t see me right now, of course.” He sounded smug. “Would you like them to?”
“No,” she muttered, answering both her teacher and the ill-timed specter. “No. I’m sorry, Mr. Frank. I just thought I saw something, like a ghost, and it scared me. I’ve been reading some scary stories recently and I guess they got to me.” It sounded lame, even to her, especially in the middle of a midterm math test.
“Very well, Anna. Please keep your hauntings to yourself in the future.”
Several people in the class snickered. Karen, her best friend, shot her a concerned look before going back to her test. Anna shut her eyes for a minute, wondering what the gossips would say about the incident. “We can talk later,” she muttered at the ghost.
“Of course, Anna.” His cultured voice sounded amused and apologetic.
She shook her head, not really angry with David. He had saved her and Sabaska’s life over the summer and she could survive a few days of ridicule so he could have some amusement. And he was right; her life was boring. Especially after last summer. She pushed those thoughts away, took a deep breath, and forced herself to focus on the test.

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Could you tell us a little more about your non-writing life?

I’m not entirely sure I have a non-writing life. Everything I do ends up fueling my fiction somehow. But, when I’m not at my computer I spend a lot of time outside riding my horse and herding sheep with my dog. I also ride my motorcycle as much as I can. I get up to the mountains as much as I can and generally enjoy the awesomeness that is Colorado.

How important are animals to you? How do they factor into your writing?

Animals are basically my family and my life. Without them life is empty and with them life is full of joy. My horses and my dog have directly inspired several of my novels and short stories. The stories I enjoy writing most have animals in them.

Tell us a little bit about Sabaska’s Quest.

Sabaska’s Quest picks up a few months after Sabaska’s Tale. School is in session, life is boring and Anna is starting to doubt all of her adventures even happened. Little things, like residual pain and relics from her journey convince her otherwise and then David shows up and heralds the return of interesting and dangerous things to Anna’s life. She has to work with Cahir, whom she hasn’t forgiven, rescue Travelers and then her best friend gets dragged into everything too.

Who or what has been the biggest influence while writing Sabaska’s Quest?

The Real Life Sabaska will always be the biggest influence for the Travelers books.

How long did it take you to write SQ novel?

Em, well, that’s kind of a hard question to answer. I was working on Sabaska’s Quest when Sabaska died and that kind of derailed me for a while. I wrote about 15K that year and I finished it up the following November for NaNo. So, two months…or a little over a year, depending on how you look at it.

Where and how do you get your ideas?

That’s always such a tough question to answer. The initial world idea came from my own adventures with Sabaska. Sabaska’s Quest came from my desire to fix some of the things in the world (plot elements getting some resolution, not things I felt I’d done badly) and bring Anna deeper into the Travelers’ world.

Which was your favorite part to write in SQ?

The obstacle course. I can’t wait to play with the course more in the next book.

Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Each novel is an adventure and I’m grateful that I’m able to share them with the world.

Fun stuff:

I LOVE the romance between Anna and Cahir! Can you give us an inside look into their

relationship?

Well, there’s going to be some tension while Anna learns to trust Cahir and Cahir is going to have to learn to deal with Anna learning how to take care of herself. He’s used to knowing more. That will be fun to play with in the future. Cahir is really in love with Anna though, and the next book that focus on them will dive into some of that. Anna loves Cahir too, but she hasn’t had a lot of experience in that regards. Cahir really hasn’t either. Ahh, tension.

And Karen, LOVE her! Do you have plans to develop her more into the next book?

Perhaps a love interest… Catherine?

Candance ☺ And yes. The next book will actually focus more on her and Triska. Anna and Cahir will still be in it, but it will be a “Triska” book. I’m thinking something like Triska’s Trial, but don’t hold me to that.

Your new character, Saga and her rider, how big a role will they play into the next book?

I’m actually working on Saga and Jarl’s “origin” story right now. I have book one finished and am about to dive into book two, so hopefully those “Legends of the Travelers” books will come out soon. In the next modern time book they will be minor characters, but they will play a bigger role later on as the war between the Vanir and Travelers peeks.

Do you have a title for book 3?

As I said above, I’m leaning toward Triska’s Trial. But I’m not sure yet.

How many books will be in the finished series?

Oh jeeze…um, at least three more in the main series, probably a few more than that. I’m also working on a “Legends” series where I can explore some of the famous Travelers and their partners from long ago.
