A southern young adult LGBT contemporary romance

Macy Diaz has managed childhood friend Jeb Porter’s crush for years. However, his infatuation turns to obsession, even putting a kid in the hospital just for hitting on her. In the past, Macy brushed it off, explained his bizarre acts away. But now she harbors a secret. She’s in love…with Jeb’s sister, Rachel.

By some miracle, Rachel loves Macy back, and despite the small minds polluting their sleepy southern town, they’re sticking together. Unfortunately, making sure Jeb never grows suspicious proves harder every day—until everything falls apart.

As a sick, unstable Jeb starts to threaten all Macy values, she is reminded of what has always been perfectly clear. Macy belongs to him, only him, and he won’t let her go. Ever.

If only Macy could’ve loved Jeb, she wouldn’t have to worry about surviving him now.

Church ain’t so bad, especially since Pastor Bill brought in the cushioned pews. It was kind of nice how my butt stayed awake, even if my eyes didn’t want to. But one glance at Mama’s scowl, and I knew better than to check out while we all got our morality medicine for the week.

“…and don’t forget, y’all need to bring a dish for the Fourth of July planning party. My Jenny’s makin’ her sweet cornbread muffins.” Pastor Bill gave his wife an adoring look and patted his big belly. “Until then, I’ll see each and every one of you next Sunday.”

I smiled. The torture was over.

In polite, orderly fashion, we all filed out of the small church that had been around since Papaw first moved here in the 1960s. I did my best to avoid the obligatory handshake with the man who ruined every Sunday morning, but he was quick for a fat guy. “Buenos días, Senora Diaz.”

Crap.

Pastor Bill’s Appalachian twang hurt my ears. The way he butchered his Spanish, that damn accent making him sound like the hick he was, had me grinding my back teeth.

“Nice sermon, Pastor.” Mama didn’t understand a lick of Spanish, but she’d never let the good pastor know it. Didn’t matter to him we were as southern as every other smelly country bumpkin in Pittman Center.
“Why, thank you.” His bloated hand covered hers. “Don’t forget the party. I do love me some Mexican food.”

Dumbass. We’re Puerto Rican.

“I wouldn’t miss it for nothing.” She slid her hand out of his sweaty grasp, a forced smile on her lips.
We walked down the old cement steps toward the mowed field everyone used as the parking lot, batting at the gnats buzzing around our heads. “When you gonna tell him we ain’t Mexican?”
“As soon as you can stay awake for the whole sermon.”

Face still burning, trying to act as cool and laidback as my friend, I shrugged and looked at Rachel. “You going, too?”
She smiled, her overbite hardly noticeable after three years in braces. “I’m being forced to by my big ape of a brother.” She nudged Jeb, who kept his eyes on me the entire time. “He promised to take me into Sevierville on Friday if I hung out with y’all today.”
I cleared my throat, hoping I didn’t sound as awkward as I felt. “What’s doing there on Friday?”
“Poetry reading. Y’all should come with.” She put her hands on her hips and held up her dainty chin. “The theme is the feminine mystique.”
Ana and Jeb rolled their eyes, while I tried hard not to nod too fast. “Yeah, I’ll go.”
Rachel beamed. “I’d like that.”
“Uh, hey, on second thought, maybe I’ll skip the movie, tag along. I could add some male mystique.” Jeb nodded in that way I’m sure he thought made him look sexy. He did have the looks, with all that blond hair and eyes as blue as the ocean. His sister had the same eyes…but bluer. So much bluer, like I could drown in them kind of blue.
Ana snorted, bringing my mind back into the kitchen.
My face grew hotter as I averted my eyes to focus on my white heels. “Sounds like a date, then.”
“I think it does,” Jeb said.
“All right, all right. Why don’t you two go round up a few others? Macy and I will head over as soon as she changes.” Ana shoved me toward the stairs, not waiting for a reply.
“So, y’all will be along soon, right?” Jeb’s deep voice followed, a hint of panic making it sound higher than usual.
“Yes, yes, just go on, now.” Ana waved him off with a laugh, and whispered, “I swear that boy can’t be more obvious.”
“I don’t have any idea what you’re talking about.”
“Yeah, sure you don’t.” Ana leaned closer. “When you gonna break his heart and tell him you like his sister?”

Excerpt #3

All right, don’t do it. Don’t say nothing stupid. But the last thing I wanted to talk about was her brother. “You know how Papaw and I go deep sea fishing every year? Near the gulf?”
Oh, damn. Too late.
She tilted her head as I held out my hand for the sketchpad. After another second of hesitation, she plopped it into my hands. “Yeah?”
I adjusted her back into the original pose and continued to draw. “Well, every year, when we’re sitting on that boat in the middle of nowhere, I spend more time trying to get the right color blue on my pad than I do fishing.” I kept my eyes on the drawing, my fingers shaking a bit. “You can’t imagine how blue that water is. So clear, so deep…inviting. It takes all I got not to jump overboard and let it close over me. It’s like a Siren. You know, how the Sirens sung those sailors to their death?”
I looked up long enough to watch her nod. Her fingers weren’t twitching to cover her mouth anymore.
“Anyway, it’s so perfect, the blue? Like nothing else I’ve ever seen.” Here it comes, the nail in the coffin. “Except when I look in your eyes. That water’s got nothing on your eyes, Rachel.”
I became hyperaware. I heard the boys fighting and Ana calling them names. Listened to Jackson burp and give his opinion on starting fires, too. I also heard Rachel’s screaming silence. Nothing was as loud as that silence.

Excerpt #4

“All right, here goes nothing.” She hopped off the rock to stand right in front of me. “You remember, after I told you, that Bubba didn’t want to see me again?”
“Yeah, and I gave him a what-for and threatened to tell Jeb if he didn’t apologize.”
She laughed a little and brushed her hair back, her fingers still shaking. “I remember. He was so scared. But he had no reason to apologize.”
“Ah, yes, he did.”
“No. He didn’t break up with me. I broke up with him.”
“Okay, I know you’re going somewhere with this, but…”
“Yes, just listen.” She took a slow breath. “After we–you know–it felt…wrong. Not wrong like ‘we shouldn’t be having sex’ wrong, but like wrong, you know?”
Impatient was too soft a word for what I felt at that moment. “No, I don’t know ’cause I never had sex before.”
“Well, I didn’t know why either up until a few months ago.” Another tear dripped from her left eye.
I jumped off the rock before I could convince myself not to and hugged her. “You can tell me anything, Rachel. I won’t tell.”
She hugged me back and buried her face in my neck. “Promise you won’t hate me.”
“Now that’s a promise I know I can keep.”
“It was wrong ’cause he wasn’t…you.”

Austin Book Fest Fun!

This post is late, so sorry! Austin was an absolute blast, and I can’t wait to head back next year 😀

The ABF/Vixen weekend started at Creme Bakery & Cafe in Austin, TX. A Fun night with great food, drinks, friends, and a BOOK EXCHANGE! Vixen love was everywhere! I was so amazed by how far and wide some of those ladies traveled to be there! On to the exchange… Gone With the Wind is a classic and my fav, and someone wrapped that baby up for the exchange. Say what?! Had to take a picture with the all-time classic masterpiece, even though I wasn’t the winner.

IMG_0176

Not complaining at all! I was gifted with Lead Me Not by A. Meredith Walters! Cannot wait to jump into that lovely book!IMG_4566

However, (sadly) I wasn’t the lucky person who left with Gone With the Wind. BUT! (sliver linings) Cristal with Three Little Birds Book Blog did (lucky)!

IMG_0177

Here’s what Cezanne with BCS Reviews and Yamara with Panty Dropping Books Blog nabbed at the exchange!

(The Bet by Rachel Van Dyken)

IMG_0171

(The Edge of Never by J.A. Redmerski)

IMG_0173

The next day was THE day! (OMG) Let me start by saying I’d NEVER been to a signing (other than my own, last month in Austin). I was so star struck. Before we left for the airport to pick up Cristal and C, I walked past Jennifer Freaking Armentrout. Holy crap! A little known fact about me: So when I get nervous, I laugh (a lot) and I either can’t form a complete sentence or I ramble with the inability of shutting up. When Yamara said, “Hey. There’s Jennifer, go say hi.” I totally laughed, turned and walked away. *sigh* No lie! I learned later that evening that Cristal was Jennifer’s assistant during the signing. More on how that went later.

My first stop at the signing was with Katie Ashley!

IMG_0182 and later in day I won an ARC of IMG_0190Holy crap, that was awesome.

Sadly, I didn’t grab a picture with Molly McAdams, but I did get Talking Chances signed by her and Chase Grayson. Before I move on, I’ve got a question about Chase. So I thought he was on a cover of her book and I (like a creeper) kept looking at him and wondered which book? Is he on the Trusting Liam cover? Regardless, I was super excited to see Molly again. Wait, back up (I’m so all over the place and hope I don’t confuse anyone). Friday night Molly was at the hotel and she totally remembered meeting Yamara and me for dinner the month before! She even asked about the signing. I can’t express how super sweet she is. Thanks to Molly for being so nice even if I seemed like a complete spaz 😉

IMG_4565

On to the next excitement! While getting a few signatures for friends, I won an ARC of Come to Me Recklessly by A.L. Jackson, who was so down to earth and nice, as well! More books to read and authors to love!

IMG_0184IMG_4567

During this time, I was gathering enough nerve to meet my “THE AUTHOR” of the event… Jennifer Armentrout. I hadn’t worked up enough balls yet, so I detoured to say hi with Cezanne, who helped out Katy McGarry. And OMG! I LOVE her books. I nearly went blank and laughed, but took in a deep chunk of air and was actually able to talk… without rambling. Win, win! Katy chatted about a new book set to come out and her characters from Crash Into You and Take Me On. WOW! Pushing The Limits started my love for Katy’s books and every story after is just amazing as the first! 😀

IMG_0183

So, I’d worked through my star struck-ness (is that a word?) and I jumped into JLA’s line. *I’m gonna do this* But before I got up to her table, I start talking to another author, Rachel Hollis. She asked where in Texas I was from, which lead to her book! Rachel’s MC from Party Girl lives in Odessa, TX (which is next door to Midland)! She mentioned a few characters who were from Midland, too! Super cool so I had to buy her book, right?! Totally meant to be 😀

IMG_0185

After meeting Rachel, Jennifer Armentrout’s line started to really move! I met a few readers and talked books while we waited. Then the time to meet Jennifer arrived. I smiled and was trying really hard not to blubber, when Jennifer said, “I’m sorry, I can’t sign these for you.” WTH?! I then started stumbling over my words while trying to form a sentence. My face was SO red and then she laughed, along with Cristal. Jennifer (freaking) Armentrout said, “She told me to give you a hard time.” We all laughed and I proceeded to tell her that I was like RIGHT beside her yesterday and she was like, “Oh,yeah. I think I remember that.” Die! I told her she was my favorite author, but the rest was a blur. Cristal captured the moment with a pic! OMG! How awesome 😀

IMG_0187

The last signature I needed was Colleen Hoover’s, and the line was out the door. Me along with a new groups of awesome ladies I met worried we wouldn’t get our books signed. However, Colleen and Tarryn walked the line and signed everyone’s book! I could imagine how exhausted they were. All the authors stayed way past the designated end time. My shoulder was killing me from hauling all those books around, but it was totally worth it!

On to the Author Meet and Greet! My first excitement was with Colleen Hoover! OMG! So flipping exciting 😀

IMG_0197

I didn’t think the night would get much better, but it did! While waiting in line for a drink, I met the author of Brightside, Kim Holden! Brightside had recently been added to my TBR list so I was (again) excited to meet the author in person. The moment of excitement hit the roof when I, ME, was noticed as an author! Convo: You look so familiar.

Me: Um, IDK, I’m on FB. (I always feel weird saying I’m an author. Like, I’m not even CLOSE to as awesome as the authors at ABF). So, I swallow and said, “Well, I’m an author.”

“OMG! Yes! Someone recommended YOUR book to me!”

ME: *jumps up and down, squealing like a maniac* “OMG, are you serious?! That is so exciting! Can we take a picture together? *I had to capture that moment forever*

“YES! “

This picture became my ALL-TIME favorite of the weekend. I will NEVER forget that awesome and wonderful feeling when meeting readers. Thank you for everything ❤

IMG_0196

So, Charlene Zapata, friend and author of Sublime Wreckage and Sublime Resistance was at this event, too! How cool. I ran over and to tell her what had just happened. She laughed and was like, “Hey. This is Tammara Webber.” Guys, Charlene is all nonchalant when she introduced us. WOW! I LOVED her book Easy!

IMG_0199

To celebrate how great the day/night was, Charlene, Amberly, Yamara, and I headed to 6th street.

IMG_0204

Do y’all know who the actor, Adrien Brody is? Well, I got to meet him:D Just kidding, but Michael looked so much like him. He’s even an avid reader 😉 We chatted books, of course 😉

IMG_0200

The weekend was a hit! Texas Tech was at the hotel recruiting students, so I HAD to snap a picture under the Go Tech balloons. Tristan and Elle would’ve been proud! IMG_0207

Before heading out for good, Distraction was left for someone to find.

IMG_0205

Heather Huff, congrats and hope you enjoy the read. The weekend was filled with such great energy, and I’m so glad to have made new pals during my stay. Have a great week, everyone ❤

Killing Time Low res

Book 2 of the For Better or for Worse Series

Death is the ultimate heartbreak. Evangeline never expected it to break hers after she died. No one should have to choose between their husband and their first love, but it is that choice that shatters her spirit.

She makes her choice, choosing not to transition, and finds that death can be vengeful too.
The world of the dead is far more complex that she ever knew, and facing the consequences of her actions might be the hardest obstacle yet, Fighting to survive in a world she doesn’t understand, she seeks the help of the wanderers. Time is running out as winter grips the land and her companions help her search for Will. Perhaps, if she keeps her eyes open and believes in her love enough, she will make her way back to him before the Hunters find her first.

Unexpected reunions, impossible choices, and long-hidden secrets will fill her journey with joy and sadness. It is Hunting season and Evangeline will have to fight for those she loves while remembering that cheating death always has a price.

Told from a dual perspective, Killing Time brings the For Better or for Worse series to a heart-stopping continuation in every sense of the word.

About the author

INickelsen

Ingrid is a 23-year-old French girl, college student, and dreamer. She currently resides in Paris, where she spends most of her time going to museums and the movies. Despite the romantic atmosphere in Montmartre, or even the fancy cafés in the Champs Elysées, she would easily trade it all for a nice walk in the woods with her schnauzer, Golden. She is always craving adventures, and finds that books are the cheapest way to travel to far-away lands. She is inwardly convinced that words have the power to heal the worst blisters on our hearts, or at least can make us forget about them for a little while. And sometimes, it is just enough to face another crazy day.

Excerpt

“Everything’s gonna be okay.”
Everything is going to be okay. I should repeat it to myself like a broken record. Everything is going to be okay. Everything is going to be okay. Why does it seem like these words have lost all their meaning?
“I promise.” He embraces my waist to push me closer to his warm chest.
“How is it going to be okay?” I shake my head, unable to restrain my tears from rolling down my burning cheeks. “How? He’s dead!”
I bury my face into his collarbone to stifle my crying, listening to nothing else but the sound of his beating heart. I feel it pounding fast and hard, matching mine. It makes me cry even more. I don’t want him to be strong for the both of us. That, too, isn’t fair.
He puts his hand on the back of my head. “I’m so sorry.”
I curl up against him and move my head slightly to glance at the dark ocean. This sandy beach is my favorite place on earth. This is where he kissed me for the first time. This is the place that always reminds me someone truly loves me, and sometimes it’s just enough to chase the hurt. This is my haven.
At least it was, until now.
I ran to meet him here as soon as my little brother released my hand in his hospital bed. I knew he wouldn’t force me to speak, and he didn’t. He just held me close. It took the time of a wave dying in the vast ocean’s arms for me to fall down in a faint, my legs quaking like an aspen leaf. His grip was so tight he fell to his knees, too, resolute not to abandon me in my rare moment of weakness.
It feels so good to be weak. I don’t care if my face is washed with tears or if I have red rims around my eyes. I need this loss of myself. I need him and my haven.
“I’m sorry, Eve. So sorry.” He sighs, clasping me tighter against him to calm me down. “I wish I could do something, anything to relieve your pain. I hate being so helpless,” he hisses between clenched teeth. “It kills me.”
I peek up at him, trying to find a light of hope, but I see nothing. Tonight, I’m more aware than anyone that love isn’t possession. It doesn’t stand still. My world can fly away in the blink of an eye, and there’s absolutely nothing I can do to fight the ruthless, cold, and brutal wind that likes to come without calling.
“I…I just want…the world to disappear,” I choke out between my sobs. The thick air is getting unbearable, harder to breathe. I press my hand against my breastbone. It hurts. It hurts too much. “I can’t live anymore, I don’t want to. Not like this. Please make it stop,” I beg him. “Just make it stop. It hurts.”
He holds my face in his hands to make sure I meet his serious gaze.
“Listen to me,” he says slowly, scanning my face as he speaks. “I’m on your side. There are times when I wish I could escape this crazy world. But you know what? It’d be a terrible mistake to switch our life off if we get the chance.”
I vaguely wipe my face with the back of my hand, lowering my gaze.
“Yes, you can be hurt and awfully bruised inside,” he continues, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear. “Sometimes you get so scared to face the day you could suffocate. But I love you.”
His last words take me by surprise. I know he does. I just didn’t expect him to say them now.
“I love you,” he says again, his voice catching ever so slightly. He strokes my face once more. “I don’t want to switch my life off… because you are my life.”
I feel paralyzed for a brief moment. It doesn’t make any sense. Who am I supposed to thank for the love he’s offering me? Are they the same odds that are against me tonight? Those who first harm me to bless me next?
I desperately love him. I do. So much. He’s always been my hero, and logically speaking, a hero is supposed to be indestructible. He’ll be here, until the end of time. I have to be sure of that. I want to be sure of that.
“He’s gone.” I shrug sadly, more tears falling out of my eyes. “He’ll never be seventeen. I’ll never get the chance to see him anymore. Never again…It’s over.” I try to put together in a wrecked breath, willing for more comfort.
“No, he’s not. He’s right here,” he says, pointing at my hammering heart. “He’s probably in a better world now.”
I instinctively look up at the starry sky with a broken smile. I hope he is. He deserves to be.
“Eve.” He tips my chin down to hold my gaze. “Maybe now is the time to share what’s in your heart, too. There’s no forever.”
I quickly shake my head.
“Don’t say that.” I take a long, ragged breath. I really don’t know how to breathe anymore. “We have time.”
The disappointed light in his eyes is his only reply.
He bends down instead, and softly puts his lips close enough to touch mine. His hands travel up my cheeks and fondle my hair as he gives me a tender kiss. These are the ones I love the most. Our breath mingles together as I forget the world around us, and just like that, the ache begins to vanish little by little.
Not entirely, but just enough for the dizziness to take over so I may abandon myself in my most secured place.
His arms.
He knows I want to say those three words. I just need more time.
